Problem :
Grocery shoppers face a broken trade-off: online delivery is convenient but strips away control over item selection, especially for fresh produce, leaving busy professionals and people with disabilities dissatisfied with what arrives at their door. In-store shopping solves that control problem but costs time through inefficient navigation and long checkout lines. User research (10 interviews, affinity mapping) confirmed this: 70% of users were dissatisfied with delivered items, and 80% wanted real-time communication with whoever was picking their groceries, a clear gap between the two shopping models that no existing competitor (Instacart, Amazon Fresh, Target) had closed.
Solution :
I designed Urban Market, an end-to-end grocery ecosystem spanning a responsive website and an in-store mobile app, unified by emerging-tech features that bridge the online/in-store gap. The flagship innovation, Co-Shopping, lets customers guide a store assistant (or family member) in real time via live video while an AR-navigation-equipped in-store app gathers items, giving remote shoppers the same control and confidence as being there in person. On the in-store side, AI-powered visual search, an AR wayfinding system, app-based self-checkout, and an optional AR-glasses mode cut time-to-item and friction at checkout, while personalization and a membership/loyalty layer were built in to drive retention and revenue.
Challenge :
The core challenge was validating an ambitious, multi-technology product vision (live video streaming, AR navigation, AI recommendations, AR hardware) with no engineering team, as a solo designer owning every stage from discovery to hi-fi prototyping across two connected platforms. I addressed this by pressure-testing every concept with a data scientist and a hardware engineer, using an Impact vs. Effort matrix to separate genuinely feasible, cost-effective solutions from "nice-in-theory" ideas, keeping the design grounded in what could realistically be built rather than just what looked good in Figma. Maintaining one coherent design system and consistent UX logic across the website and mobile app, while designing for accessibility (WCAG-conscious contrast, disability-first use cases), added a second layer of complexity to manage solo.
Summary :
Urban Market demonstrates 0-to-1 product design ownership: independently running discovery-to-delivery UX research, translating fuzzy user pain points into a differentiated, technically-vetted product strategy, and defining the KPI framework (engagement, conversion, AOV, CLV, NPS, retention) a real product team would use to measure success. The cross-functional habit of validating feasibility with data science and hardware experts, the focus on accessibility and inclusive design, and the emphasis on checkout/conversion flows and personalization-driven revenue growth are the same muscles senior product design roles in tech and fintech need: translating ambiguous problems into scalable, business-aligned, user-centered solutions.
